31 Days in pictures: Day Six

Day 06 - A picture of a person you would like to trade places with for a day.
Teresa the coolest homesteader ever

I thought about this one for the longest time. I went through all the famous people. I came to the conclusion that it would have to be my friend Teresa. She's the most interesting person I know. She's a stay at home homesteader. I can't even call her a SAHM or SAHW because she's so much more than that. She designed their house herself. I mean literally drew it out. She googled how to and did it. She looks for new things to learn every day...and she does them. She's been blessed with the fortune to get to stay home and home school their children. She's made it fun too. They go on field trips that are very educational and fun. She grows her on own food, raises chickens, rabbits, and a few other very weird animals. She's living the life I'd love to live if given the opportunity to. On top of it all, she loves God and shows it not through her words but through her actions. You just feel him with you when you're with her. I love that feeling. So if I could trade places for a day, it would be with her. My homesteading, Blueman loving, tattooed, tree hugging, computer addicted, paper making friend Teresa.

31 Days in pictures: Day Five

Day 05 - A picture of your favorite memory.
Little Bit and Crisco
This is just one of a million moments that are my favorite. This one, however, represents a bond that all three of my boys have and have had since birth. Crisco is about 8 in this picture and little bit was a little over a year old. Crisco always watched this old Superman Cartoon at my mom's house. The big blue stool was always drug across the living room and he planted himself right there. Little bit is very much a mama's boy and was usually at me feet 24/7. This day we were visiting and I was in the kitchen. I heard the little brown stool scrapping across the floor and realized Little Bit had left my side. Mom and I went to inspect and this was what I saw. Little Bit imitating his biggest bubby. Crisco had looked down at him and handed him one of his "granny" cookies and they sat there for 45 minutes watching the old superman shows. There's been many of these moments since then but this one captures so much for me. Crisco has Tourette's and OCD but his brothers (both of them) look up to him so much. Little Bit puts it like this "Crisco is cool. He's kind of weird but the cool kind of weird." Looking at this picture I see two of my three greatest accomplishments in this world. It makes me smile and makes me so blessed.

Day 04 - A picture of your favorite night.
Winter Jam 2010
I took two of my guys and a few other youth to Winter Jam 2010. I had the best time. I can't even begin to describe what an awesome experience it was to combine my love for God and my love for music. It was my youngest's first concert ever and he's hooked. I can't wait to go back in 2011. If it comes to your neck of the woods I highly suggest going.

31 Days in pictures: Day Three

Day 03 - A picture of the cast from your favorite show.
Chuck

I love this show. I'm not a big television watcher. I have three males and one remote in my house. You do the math. ha! ha! Honestly, between classes, house work, reading, looming, and the lack of the ability to sit still for very long I don't watch very much TV. I do, however, make every effort to be in front of the flatscreen when Chuck comes on. It makes me laugh. I also like that for once the show let the two love interests actually get together and stay together without ruining the show. Kudos to the writers. That's my favorite cast in pictures.

31 Days in pictures: Day Two

Day 02 - A picture of you and someone you used to be close with.

Jen, Me & Crisco, & Neecie early 90s

These two were with me almost every step of my adolescence. We were labeled the Three Amigas and if you saw one of us you saw the other two. I miss them so much. States away from each other and 20 some years but if they called me today I'd be there in a heart beat.

Letters of a Woman Homesteader

That sounds so cool. I wish it was me but it's my current read. I haven't posted anything lately of what I'm reading mainly because I haven't been reading. I can give a million excuses but the truth is with the overload of classes I took last semester (mostly biology courses) I was come completely burnt out of the written word. I know! I didn't think it was possible. I'm back though. I found a delightful ebook on Kindle for my favorite price of FREE. (Don't you love the freebies?) I picked this book because it speaks to me. As corny as that sounds, I'm fascinated with the whole homesteading way of life. I love to learn how to do things the old way. Don't get me wrong. I love my hot water showers and my internet but it's also pretty nifty to learn how to make bread, put up corn, and dip a candle or two. Just one of those hobbies I like to put myself and my poor children through. These things have actually come in handy a time or two.

Letters of a Woman Homesteader (Dover Books on Americana)Anywho, back to my point. (I'm so good at getting sidetrack these days) My current read is called Letters of a Woman Homesteader . Here's a brief description thanks to an Amazon.com poster:
"The writer of the following letters is a young woman who lost her husband in a railroad accident and went to Denver to seek support for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Jerrine. Turning her hand to the nearest work, she went out by the day to work as a housecleaner and laundress. Later, seeking to better herself, she accepted employment as a housekeeper for a well-to-do Scottish cattleman, Mr. Stewart, who had taken up a quarter-section in Wyoming. The letters, written through several years to a former employer in Denver, tell of her new life in the new country. They are genuine letters, and are printed as written, except for occasional omissions and alterations of names."
The letters begin in 1909, apparently right after a homestead act made it possible for the author, Elinore Pruitt Stewart, to claim a homestead of 160 acres in Wyoming. Ms. Stewart is a very resourceful woman as well as a wonderful story-teller. She explains that she never received formal education but she refers to current literature so I am guessing that she has learned to write from her interest in reading. Apparently she was a prolific author in her time and one of her descendants has published a book about her. (There are pictures of her on the web and more information if you want to know more about her.)
Elinore has a cheerful and pragmatic approach to life making her well-written letters a lot of fun to read. She mostly writes about events, usually involving meeting some of the other inhabitants of the area, ranging from mountain men to Mormons. She loves to go camping and several times recounts setting out on her horse with her baby and camping in the wilderness. She brings very little supplies, catching trout and snaring rabbits for food. She also does some description of her everyday life which apparently was very busy and full of hard work but she always describes it as fulfilling. "
So that's my new reading in a nutshell. It is quite addictive and I've felt like she's pulled me back in time with her words. Sometimes I swear I can hear the wind or the wolves. I love books like this. Happy New Year and happy reading everyone.
